Meet Our Principal, Faculty & Staff

PhD in English, Texas Tech University

Dr. Kristina Lewis earned her Ph.D. in English from Texas Tech University in 2024 after serving as a Graduate Instructor for five years (teaching Composition I & II).

She is entering her third year at Van Houston Academy, where she teaches SAT Reading & Writing, Dual Credit Composition I & II, and assists Seniors with their Personal Essays for college applications.

Dr. Lewis challenges her students to develop necessary analytical thinking, writing, comprehension, and communication skills. Alongside such rigor, she is often referred to as a “big sister” by her students on account of her helpful demeanor and encouragement of their successes.

PhD in English, University of California – Davis

Treena Balds teaches middle- and high-school reading and writing. After pursuing her undergraduate degree in English literature and writing, she completed an MSc. in Education (literacy) and a Ph.D. in English.

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Balds has taught students at every level, from kindergartners to undergraduates. Her goal is to inculcate in her students a love for reading while dispelling their fear of writing and increasing their overall facility with the language so they can transform their ideas into beautiful poetry/prose.

In addition to reading and writing, she enjoys music, dancing, and mathematics.

MS in Computer Science, University of South Florida

This is Fahim Rahman, a Computer Science and Robotics educator at Van Houston Academy. He earned his B.Sc. from BRAC University and later completed his Master’s in Computer Science at the University of South Florida, where he conducted research in deep learning and AI.

His passion for teaching began as a university teaching assistant, supporting students in programming and computer science fundamentals. With experience as an AI engineer and educator, he combines technical expertise with creative teaching methods to make complex concepts engaging and accessible.

His goal is to inspire students to think critically, innovate, and explore their potential through technology.

PhD in Biomedical Sciences, University of South Carolina

Dr. Priya Choudhury is currently a Biology Teacher at Van Houston Academy, Houston, Texas, teaching Dual Credit Biology, AP Biology, Environmental Sciences etc.

Dr. Choudhury has a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Carolina, and pursued research in the field of cell biology specializing in breast cancer, nuclear hormone receptors, lung and liver diseases, MRSA etc.

She is also a Professor of Biology at the Houston Community College. She is the recipient of the Bedichek Orman Grant and Young Investigator Award from the American Lung Association.

Besides academics, Dr. Choudhury enjoys reading, playing the violin and hiking.

MS Industrial Engineering and MS STEM Instructor, Texas Tech University

Yasir Iqbal is a STEM Instructor at Van Houston Academy, where he teaches physics, mathematics, engineering, and practical problem-solving. He holds master’s degrees in Industrial Engineering and Physics from Texas Tech University and previously served as a Teaching Assistant in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.

His experience includes quality assurance, applied research, data analysis, and process improvement. Mr. Iqbal helps students build quantitative reasoning, analytical skills, and confidence through clear instruction, hands-on activities, and individualized support.

Outside the classroom, he enjoys road trips, outdoor sports, and music.

MLA History, University of St. Thomas, MA Curriculum & Instruction, Sam Houston

Mrs. Wagers is beginning her 23rd year teaching this fall.

She earned a Bachelor of Science from Southwest Texas State University, Master of Liberal Arts in History from the University of St. Thomas, Master of Arts in Education from Sam Houston State University, and is currently pursuing a PhD in History from Liberty University, specializing in Southern History.

Mrs. Wagers is the mother of four, her youngest is a 5th grader at Van Houston. She is a beloved Texan fan!

In her spare time, she works on genealogy and has traced her lineage back to Charlemagne. When not in the classroom, she enjoys hitting the gym and spur of the moment road trips.

PhD in Mathematics & MA in Math Education, University of Montana, MA in Mathematics, University of Jordan

Amer Rawabdeh is a passionate mathematics educator with over a decade of experience teaching at both secondary and university levels. His teaching spans a broad range of mathematics, including Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics, and Linear Algebra.

With a strong background in curriculum development and mathematical research, Amer brings both academic depth and practical teaching experience to the classroom. He is dedicated to creating engaging, student-centered learning environments that make challenging mathematical ideas accessible, meaningful, and rewarding.

MA History/Political Science, Texas A&M University-Commerce

Mr Avila has 10 years of experience teaching in higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Texas A&M University - Commerce with majors and minors in history and political science.

His specific research interests have included the intersection of American agriculture, labor, and politics in the 20th century.

He loves spending time with his son exploring all that Texas has to offer. It has to be said that Mr. Avila is not originally from Texas, but he got here as soon as he could.

My name is Ashley Henderson and I’m so excited to be stepping into the Kindergarten teacher role at Van Houston Academy!

I have 8 years of teaching under my belt, at a charter school. I have previously taught special education, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd-7th social studies, and for the past 3 years I have focused on Pre-K.

I love being able to be a child’s first experience with school. The wonder and amazement in a child's eyes gives me the greatest joy. I love my family, coffee, music, travel, and being an educator.

Teacher Ruth S. Sumambot, a dedicated and passionate educator with over 12 years of teaching experience. She is grateful for every opportunity to teach, inspire, and make a positive difference in the lives of her learners.

She believes that teaching is not only about sharing knowledge but also about nurturing kindness, confidence, and a love for learning.

My name is Shelly Ann Patiram, and I am excited to join the Van Houston Academy community! I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arcadia University and taught kindergarten in South Korea, where I developed a passion for creating engaging, student-centered learning experiences.

After teaching abroad, I spent several years raising my family, strengthening my appreciation for early childhood development and family partnerships. I am thrilled to return to the classroom and support students' academic, social, and emotional growth.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, traveling, and exploring new cultures.

Mrs. Latacia Matthews is a dedicated Second Grade Teacher at Van Houston Academy School with 20 years of teaching experience. She is passionate about creating a positive, inclusive classroom where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.

Mrs. Matthews believes in recognizing each child's unique talents, treating every student with fairness, and helping close academic gaps through high expectations, encouragement, and meaningful instruction. She is committed to ensuring all students feel visible and represented in the curriculum while building strong relationships that support both academic and personal growth.

Outside the classroom, she enjoys fishing, camping, spending time with her family, and eating seafood. She looks forward to partnering with families to make learning a rewarding and memorable experience for every child.

Mrs. Ana Mae C. Villaruz is a passionate and dedicated elementary teacher with over 10 years of teaching experience. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Management.

She believes that every child is unique and deserves a safe, caring, and engaging learning environment. As a teacher, she strives to inspire her students to learn, grow, and become confident and kind individuals.

A Houston native, Sunshine Grant believes every student deserves an educator who inspires confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

With more than 10 years of experience across public, charter, and private schools, she brings a unique blend of educational expertise, communication, and creativity to the classroom. A graduate of the University of Houston–Downtown with a degree in Rhetorical and Public Communication, Sunshine is passionate about literacy, leadership, and building meaningful relationships.

Beyond teaching, she enjoys traveling, fashion, graphic design, yoga, and health and wellness. Her goal is simple: empower every student to discover the power of their own voice.

When I'm not at school, you can find me walking my two dogs, at the park, playing a round of golf, or enjoying my favorite meal at Los Tios!

Mr. Marvin Albeza is a passionate and dedicated elementary teacher with 9 years of teaching experience. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and has pursued graduate studies in Educational Management.

He believes that every child can learn and succeed when given proper guidance, support, and encouragement. His goal is to create a safe, caring, and engaging classroom where students can grow academically, build confidence, and develop good character.

My name is Jaleelah Shabazz! I am excited to begin my fourth year at Van Houston Academy! I earned my Bachelor's degree in English from Prairie View A&M University.

Before becoming a classroom teacher, I worked at my university's Writing Center, served as a substitute teacher, and taught infants in a daycare; these experiences strengthened my passion for helping students grow. I have taught high school English, middle school Reading and Writing, Science, and Social Studies.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading, watching dystopian movies, practicing Pilates, and spending time with puppies.
